Classroom Projects
In this section you will find examples of different projects I have created to enhance learning in my lessons. I believe that it is important to incorporate all types of games and activities into the classroom. If students are given multiple ways to learn material, they are more likely to succeed. These projects are fun things that can be used as rewards for good behavior, as well as something to fill extra time. Regardless of how they are being used, the students are still learning the necessary material and are having fun doing so.
"Escape to Canada"
This is a board game that was created to go along with an Underground Railroad unit. It is played the same way as Candy Land. Each player rolls the dice and whatever color square they land on, that is the card they must choose. Each card has questions and situations that the students must answer or reply to. The winner is the student who reaches the image of Canada first.
"Wanted" Posters
This is an example of an assessment that I created for my second grade students. During a reading block, the students were paired up and each group read a Junie B. Jones chapter book. The students were taught about character traits and setting in a series of mini lessons. After the book was finished, each student made their own "wanted" poster for a character in their book. They were required to write five sentences about what the character looked like, reason for being on the poster, and other describing sentences. The students then were able to draw a picture and create a collage using some describing words for their character. The class then voted for their favorites. The winners recieved lunch with the teachers.
Oreo Cookie Moon Phases
This project was designed to help my second grade students learn the simplest phases of the moon. This project was completed in the "teacher center" during our center rotations. The students were asked questions about the phases of the moon and were then able to create their own moon phases chart using Oreo Cookies. The students loved this activity because of the cookies. They could relate to the project because they knew what oreos were, and they had fun changing the shape of the cream filling to match the phases of the moon. They each got to eat the top of their oreo as they worked as well!
